Religion, The Missing Dimension Of Statecraft Essays - Peace
Religion, The Missing Dimension Of Statecraft Religion, The Missing Dimension of Statecraft Douglas Johnston and Cynthia Sampson, editors Center for Strategic and International Studies Editors: Douglas Johnston and Cynthia Sampson compiled these essays for the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Douglas Johnston has since founded the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy, with the goal of encouraging faith based mediation through education and strategy development. Cynthia Sampson is the president of Peace Discovery Initiatives, a faith-based organization with the goal of peace building around the world. Argument: The main focus of this book is to bring religion back into politics. For various reasons, the religion factor has been removed from policy making around the world, to the detriment of international relations. Johnston conveys the importance of religion when dealing with international policy, especially when one of the parties has a worldview that is deeply rooted in religion. Seven examples of how religious involvement positively affected international relations and eventually brought about reconciliation are used: the role of the Moral Re-Armament Movement in Franco-German Reconciliation, the role of religious groups, especially the Quakers, in restoring peace between the Sandinistas and the East Coast Indians, the role of the Quakers in the Nigerian civil war, the role of the churches in East Germany during the break down of the Berlin wall and the events leading up to that even, the role of the Catholic Church and the 1968 revolution in the Philippines, the role of the c hurch during apartheid in South Africa, and the role of religious actors in the transformation of Rhodesia to Zimbabwe. The main reason given for the success of religious actors in conflict resolution is their ability to gain trust and act as honest brokers between the groups involved. The Western powers cannot afford to ignore the importance of religion around the world nor can they afford to let the rare skills of relationship building brought by religious actors to go to waste. Religious groups have the desire and key qualities of trust building, patience, and unbiased involvement necessary to facilitate reconciliation and build peace around the world. These attributes are vital to reconciliation and mediation in a world where deception and diplomacy often come hand in hand. Analysis: It clear that one of the key factors of the success of religious actors (RAs) in conflict resolution is their focus on reconciliation and a true desire to be unbiased mediators. Unlike others at the proverbial table of peacebuilding, religious actors usually seek only reconciliation and peace, and not personal gain. This, along with their ability to build faithful relationships, is a vital part of their work. Many government officials have picked up on this, and have used them to carry messages between themselves and other parties involved in conflict. RAs are often referred to as honest brokers in the book; years of trust building were required to build these bonds of trust. However, this trust is invaluable when it came time to sit down and talk. Most faith-based NGOs see this as a core value of the process of reconciliation; they understand the need for a trusting relationship to be built in order to be truly reconciled. Emerging leaders should take the message of this b ook into consideration and know that in order to truly change the world reconciliation must be built on a firm foundation of trust and honesty, both of which are key elements in faith-based mediation. The subject of why religion has been taken out of contemporary diplomacy was neglected, though this information would have given the reader a firmer foundation from which to defend their argument to include religion as a factor in international policy. The book is very thorough and well thought out. Readers will become well educated about the facts and people involved in each story. A reader should be very careful not to let the endless details slow their reading but to continue to gain an understanding. The book is useful to both the reader that just wants ideas pertaining to the use of religion in international policy and the reader who is looking for specific examples to use. I found myself confused by the style of some of the authors that wrote in great detail

The Methods for Retaining Employees
The Methods for Retaining Employees Introduction There are many ways that can be used to retain employees. Compensating employees handsomely has long been viewed as one of the best ways of retaining employees.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on The Methods for Retaining Employees specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Apart from good salary, research has shown that there are other ways which are equally significant in retaining employees. Some of these methods are ââ¬Å"challenging and a meaningful work, opportunities to learn and grow, the sense of being part of a group, a good boss, and meeting individual needsâ⬠(kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003, p. 291). These methods basically aim at making the workplace environment a place that employees value and admire. This essay will discuss the methods which can make the workplace a place significance and value to the employee and thus make them to prefer working at their current organization as opposed to working els ewhere. The Kind of Work Employees Do It has been shown that employees value work that satisfies them. Apart from looking for monetary gain, most employees will prefer challenging work to work which is easy to handle. Demanding work tests the limits of an employee and this has been shown to be what most employees prefer especially for those in the technical fields (kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003). Challenging work make a great contribution to the organization one is working for. There is usually a great sense of satisfaction which comes with making significant contribution to an organization one is working for. Making significant contribution in a place of work is quite encouraging and helps to connect employees to their work. It enhances the pleasure derived from working. In such kind of an environment, productivity is usually high and this makes what one does enjoyable.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Learning and Growing in a Workplace Career growth is a great reason that can keep employees in their current jobs. Every person seeks to develop in his or her career. Giving an allowance for career development in a workplace therefore acts as a great motivation for an employee to maintain his current work and employer. Career development makes it possible for an employee to be up to date with emerging issues in his or her career (kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003). Career growth of employees can be enhanced by the provisional of formal training. Training of employees helps them to be at par with changes in their careers and this will ensure that they uphold the recommended practices at the workplace. Apart from formal training, coaching and provision of mentorship ses sions equally helps to shape oneââ¬â¢s career in the right direction. Employers should encourage employees to join professional networks. These networks are important as they help one to develop in his or her career as there is sharing among professionals in the same field (kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003). The Sense of Belonging Working in an organization which fosters a sense of belonging is an encouraging factor. A sense of belonging enables one to feel at home in the work place. A workplace which fosters a sense of belonging among the employees creates a home like environment whereby employees feel being part of a big family.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on The Methods for Retaining Employees specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This sense of unity creates cohesion among employees and makes working in such a workplace irresistible. With such kind of a workplace, it is hard for employees to want to switch organizations. There are many ways that employers can create a sense of belonging in a workplace the best being creating forums where employees can get to know each other more. Such forums may include monthly dinners and end of either fiscal year or calendar year parties (Jackson, 2012). Good Bosses Managers and supervisors especially those to whom employees report directly should be good in the eyes of their employees. The following behaviors when displayed by managers and supervisors have been shown to put off employees: ââ¬Å"Rudeness, impatience, arrogance, intimidation, yelling, being condescending or demeaning, belittling or embarrassing people, swearing, telling lies, sexual harassment, using inappropriate humor, and demonstrating sexism or racismâ⬠(kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003, p. 294). Bosses have an obligation to ensure that their relationship with their juniors is one which fosters understanding. A bad boss will make the workplace a stressful place; nobody wants to be stressed and t herefore employees may choose to find alternative opportunities to work elsewhere. Even if employees do not opt to move out due to bad bosses, the cold relationship between the employees and the boss will affect the productivity of the employees (kaye Jordan-Evans, 2003). Good bosses recognize good work accomplished by their employees and do not take credit for what others have done. Recognition can be made through a word of mouth or a token given through platforms such as employee of the month, the most hardworking employee among other platforms (Shenkel Gardner, 2004).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Meeting Individual Needs An organization whose employees are of different age groups requires different approaches to retain the employees. It has been noted that Generation-Y employees would prefer workplaces which give them a wide range of exposure to their career fields. For the case of Generation-X workers, mentoring programs and programs which advance their careers would be most attractive. Lastly, the baby boomers would prefer programs which aim at increasing their retirement benefits, for instance, reworking their payment to allow for lower tax deductions (Gettler, 2008). There are other ways through which companies can necessitate the extension of careers. One such can be through arranging for employees to participate in charity work. Employees can also be given the opportunity to work on special project boards. Making employees aware of technical conferences and allowing them to attend such forums also is quite motivating. Technical conferences help to update employees on a dvances made in their career fields (Gettler, 2008). Conclusion Retaining employees goes beyond handsome compensation in form of big salaries. Apart from a good salary, employees have other needs which need satisfaction. Bosses have an obligation to create an environment that enables employees to be comfortable and advance their careers. It has been shown that employees prefer challenging work which demands the skills they have acquired. Workplaces which provide a means of advancing oneââ¬â¢s career have also been pointed out as being attractive to employees. A workplace which creates a sense of belonging is also preferable as it creates unity and cohesion among employees. Bosses have been shown to also play a major role in attracting employees to a workplace. Understanding and rational bosses work well with employees. Bad bosses can be a source of stress to employees and this can easily make employees seek employment elsewhere. Workplaces should be flexible enough to meet some o f the individual needs of employees. References Gettler, L. (2008). How to retain staff ââ¬â without breaking the bank. Smart Company. Web. The Pros and Cons of Not Vaccinating Your Child Essay
The Pros and Cons of Not Vaccinating Your Child - Essay Example Vaccination against the highly prevalent infectious diseases is necessary to protect the individual from acquiring the disease and eradicating the disease from the whole community as well as stopping its further transmission. Many goals of eradicating particular infectious diseases have been attained by mass vaccination programs. In 1980, the WHO eradicated small-pox worldwide by a mass vaccination program. In 1988, WHO, resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis by vaccination. The number of cases world-wide has fallen from 350,000 to 1651 at present (Colledge et al 2010). Vaccines are associated with a number of risks and they are also associated with certain risks. However, the vaccines are also associated with a vast number of benefits. Many parents question the safety and effectiveness of vaccinating their children and show concern about the adverse effects associated with it. Proper and adequate awareness should be provided to the parents so that they can make a healthy decision for t heir children after analyzing the pros and cons. The optimal benefits and risks associated with not vaccinating the children should be analyzed before providing immunization to the children. All vaccines are associated with side-effects and most of them are either minor or very rare. The CDC develops a Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS) that contains all the relevant information regarding the vaccines. The parents should be provided with VIS so that they are fully aware of the side-effects and do not panic in case of post-vaccination effects. The most common side-effects associated with the vaccines are fever and redness and swelling or infection at the site of the injection. Rarely, headaches, weakness or tiredness and rash also develop in the children. Seizures, coma, Gullain-Barre and death are very rare adverse effects of vaccination and are least expected. There are certain contraindications of vaccination and these children should not be immunized. Children with suppressed immuni ty because of any disease or disease related treatment should not be vaccinated at all. There are high chances that they will respond poorly to the inactivated vaccine agents. Any allergies to the vaccine components are also a contraindication for vaccine administration. In such cases of contraindications, it is recommended that prevention of the disease is attained through other preventive measures (Hansel 2012). The side-effects of vaccination are different for particular vaccines and parents should attain complete awareness before putting forward their children for the vaccination programs. However, the benefits of not vaccinating children are not huge and it is important to protect your children from the prevalent infectious diseases. The benefits of the vaccines have been evident since the past 100 years from the eradication of the variola virus, control of the polio and measles infection and the reduction of many vaccine-preventable diseases. However, the benefits are reducing as the vaccine-preventable diseases are becoming rare or have been eradicated. Although MANY diseases have been controlled in United States, outbreaks of certain diseases like measles have brought forward the benefits of vaccines. Researches showed that children who were not vaccinated had 35 folds greater risk of developing measles as compared to

Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 10
Religion - Essay Example The idealized, spiritualized essence of God can be comprehended only by refined minds, bent on spiritualism, and only after sustained effort. To the vast majority of mankind, the visible manifestation of God goes a long way towards focusing the inner mind and thoughts on Divinity. This initial, primitive belief that God is only present in that particular picture, or only in that particular form, can, with spiritual growth, metamorphose into the realization that God is an all-pervading, formless entity. Visible forms can be justified as symbolic, spiritual aids to the realization of God. One of the basic tenets of Christianity is the belief that God sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to earth, as the Redeemer to deliver sinful humanity from eternal damnation. Jesus took upon himself the collective sins of humanity and accepted his martyrdom on the cross as the expiation of these sins. This belief probably arises from the primitive belief that the deities must be placated through sacrifice, and the shedding of blood is a prerequisite for absolution. This sacrificial offering, be it the ox of the ancient Romans, or the lamb of the Jews, must be the purest and most perfect to serve the purpose. In this context, the pure, sinless Jesus constitutes the perfect sacrifice in the eyes of God. This ââ¬Ësubstitution theory,ââ¬â¢ according to which Jesusââ¬â¢ vicarious punishment redeemed humanity, has a major flaw. If one concedes that Jesusââ¬â¢ punishment has indeed absolved humanity from sin, does it follow that man is now free to sin without having to face the c onsequences of his actions? If Jesus has obtained a prior, blanket absolution for all sinners, this is something in the light of a ââ¬Ëlicense to sinââ¬â¢ with impunity. This poses a problem to the acceptance of the substitution theory. The word ââ¬ËChristââ¬â¢ means the ââ¬ËAnointed One,ââ¬â¢ or the

America Needs Affordable Housing Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research
America Needs Affordable Housing It is often easy to castigate large cities or third world countries as failures in the field of affordable housing, yet the crisis, like an invisible cancer, manifests itself in many forms, plaguing both urban and suburban areas. Reformers have wrestled passionately with the issue for centuries, revealing the severity of the situation in an attempt for change, while politicians have only responded with band aid solutions. Unfortunately, the housing crisis easily fades from our memory, replaced by visions of homeless vets, or starving children. Metropolis magazine explains that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦though billions of dollars are spent each year on housing and development programs worldwide, ? At least 1 billion people lack adequate housing; some 100 million have none at all.? In an attempt to correct this worldwide dilemma, a United Nations conference, Habitat II, was held in Istanbul, Turkey in June of 1996. This conference was open not only to government leaders, but also to community orga nizers, non governmental organizations, architects and planners. ââ¬Å"By the year 2000, half the worldââ¬â¢s people will live in cities. By the year 2025, two thirds of the world population will be urban dwellers ? Globally, one million people move from the countryside to the city each week.? Martin Johnson, a community organizer and Princeton professor who attended Habitat II, definitively put into words the focus of the deliberations. Alice Walker â⬠flowers Essay
ââ¬Å"The Flowersâ⬠is a story written by Alice Walker, in 1988. Itââ¬â¢s a 3th-person narrator that tells the story. The story tells us about a girl, whose name is Myop. She lives near a forest in a cabin with her family. Sometimes she walks in the forest with her mother, they collect nuts among the fallen leaves ââ¬â actually they have done it many times, so thatââ¬â¢s why Myop knows the forest very well. One day she is out for one of these walks, but by herself. This day something is different in the forest, and Myop decides to go home, but suddenly there is a manâ⬠¦lying in the forest floor, just beside a wild pink rose. When first we meet Myop she is walking near her house, playing around with her stick making sounds, she is walking towards the forest. Myop is a ten-year-old girl, and it seems like she still is a bit naive and unaware of what is going on in the world. This I also therefor I think the name Myop maybe could come from the expression ââ¬Å"myopiaâ⬠, which means narrow sighted or shortsighted. Myopia causes that the image you see, when you look at something in a longer distance, itââ¬â¢s out of focus or most likely impossible to see. That day she was walking in the forest alone. She made her own path, going that way and that way, while she was collecting blue flowers. She was having fun all by herself. She seems very innocent, but also confident, because she is walking all by herself. Normally she likes to walk in the forest, and also this day until something changes, suddenly the forest doesnââ¬â¢t feel safe anymore, and as a reader you get a feeling of fear on the behalf of Myop. In the text there is written ââ¬Å"the strangeness of the land made it not as pleasant as her usual hauntsâ⬠(page 1 line 24). Here you begin thinking of what might happen since things suddenly are different than they use to. Myop is getting insecure and afraid, so she decides to walk back home to the house, but on her way home she stumbles over something. ââ¬Å"It was then she stepped smack into his eyes. Her heel became lodged in the broken ridge between brow and nose, and she reached down quickly, unafraid, to free herself.â⬠(page 1, line 26-29). This is possibly the first time Myop faces dead, until now she has been childish and a bit naive to the rest of the world. So I canââ¬â¢t image that she has been faced with something so serious like this before. The man she stumbles over Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure have been an Afro-American. I say that because he was tall, had big bones and wore blue overalls, these things I mean prove that he was an Afro-American, because all of these things are typical for an Afro-American man and not a white man. Myop is also an Afro-American, this we hear in the text ââ¬Å"the stick clutched in her dark brown handâ⬠(page 1 line 9). Because of that it sort of takes a rotation in the story. I begin to think about White vs. Black people, and things like lynching or murder. There is a noose near the man, and that indicate that he might have been exposed to hanging/lynching. The fact that he isnââ¬â¢t buried is also a thing that makes me think of murder, and not a normal dead. And then there is the rose, there is only ONE pink rose, and itââ¬â¢s just beside the body of the man. This could might be a sign to the reader, that there maybe had been someone and laid it there, just like to a funeral where w e lay flowers on the grave. This almost convinces me of the fact that the man was killed, and there have been someone who loved him to say goodbye to him. In the end of the story Myop lays her own blue flowers beside the pink rose. I think it could be a sign that Myop has changed that day, she has seen some terrifying things, and involuntarily needed to handle and think of things, which actually what just what she needed. The walk in the forest possibly made her see that the world isnââ¬â¢t just all good, and that there is some things out in the real world, which is not what she expected ââ¬â but itââ¬â¢s not bad that this happened to her, in a way it helped her grow away from being a kid. Some day we grow up and need to see the world in a different perspective, than we do as kids. This day was the day Myop mentally grew a bit older, and may started to see the world in a different way.

Engineering Ethics of Titanic Sinking Essay - 1756 Words
Steven Miller Phl 3221 Professor Tapp 5/24/2007 Utilitarianism Look at the Titanic When engineers design a product many things go in to the decision making process when it comes to selecting materials, design, and the manufacturing processes. One concern that has always been in the decision making process is trying to make sure the outcome will always be ethically good, although this isnââ¬â¢t always the case. Try as they might, no person is perfect, and accidents do happen. When engineering disasters happen there are many factors that may be involved, such as human factors, design flaws, extreme conditions, and materials failures. When these things do happen it is important to look at the ethical aspect of each part of the failure andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Jeremy Bentham created an algorithm to determine the degree or amount of pleasure that a specific action is likely to cause. He called this Hedonic Calculus and it was divided into seven different categories. Bentham based this calculation off of intensity, or the strength of the pleasure, duration or how long the pleasure will last, certainty or how likely it is pleasure will occur, propinquity or how soon the pleasure will occur, fecundity or the likeliness it will be followed by pleasures, purity or probability that feelings of the opposite will occur, and extent or how many people will be affected. I will try to put some of the major failures of the Titanic in to these categories to determine the ethical standing of the engineers responsible for the Titanic. When analyzing this disaster the first thing to consider is the engineerââ¬â¢s design of the Titanic. The Titanic was employing many new and innovative designs that were believed to make the Titanic the safest ship ever built at that time. The engineerââ¬â¢s of the vessel made claims that the Titanic was ââ¬Å"unsinkableâ⬠and that ââ¬Å"even in the worst possible accident at sea, the ship should have stayed afloat for two to three days.â⬠One of the features that lead them to this claim was the 16 wate rtight compartments in the hull of the ship. Cigarettes in America Essay - 1450 Words
In the United States, when a disease is rapid, many steps are taken to reduce causes and find cures for the disease; walks, fundraisers, commercials and research are held by those that are committed to assist in the elimination of these diseases and the treatment of the sick. The leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic respiratory disease. The most deadly origin of disease is cigarette smoking. A cigarette contains many harmful chemicals that damage the smokersââ¬â¢ body as well as the people that surround the smoker. Students process information at varying pace, because of individual cognitive development, as well as their different living environment and socio-economic backgrounds. Therefore, educators need to recognize their differences and meet the diverse needs of their students. The Battle of Waterloo Free Essays
he The Battle of Waterloo Napoleon was just recently made emperor again in France in 1815. And his enemyââ¬â¢s had already formed an alliance against him. He only had one way to stay emperor and that was to fight his way through it. We will write a custom essay sample on The Battle of Waterloo or any similar topic only for you Order Now He had one main goal in his grand strategy to win the war and that was to isolate the allied and Prussian armies, and annihilate each one separately. This was a great strategy in theory because if he could destroy the coalition forces before they were reinforced then he might be able to drive the British back to the sea and knock the Prussianââ¬â¢s out of the war. This ended up leading to the strategy proper of the war because Napoleon knew that the British and Prussian armies were trying to meet up so he marched his army to a spot where he was in between them. Once his army was in the middle he ended up hitting the British on the west side and the Prussians on the east side. When Wellington saw how fast the French were moving he knew he had to act fast so he concentrated most of his troops at Quatre-Bras so that he could hold a tenuous position against the soldiers of Neyââ¬â¢s left wing. The grand tactics come in when Napoleon wants Ney to take the crossroads of Quatre-Bras so that way he can go reinforce him if needed. This led to the battle against the British there, where the French were being held off pretty well. But while this was happening the French attacked the Prussians at Ligny and were able to defeat them which made holding Quatre-Bras for the British untenable. So the British retreated and marched north parallel to the Prussians retreat. These precursor battles affected the culminating campaign battle because a lot of men were lost and a portion of Napoleonsââ¬â¢ army was off searching for the retreating Prussians at the time of Waterloo. There were many battlefield maneuvers that impacted the outcomes of the battles. One was when Wellington had ordered in reinforcements for Quatre-Bras. This was good because they were starting to lose the battle until the reinforcements got there and then they were able to push Neyââ¬â¢s forces back. The next maneuver was when the Prussians had been defeated they were able to retreat unnoticed from the French. The Prussians getting away without the French knowing was big because they were able to make it back to Wavres where there reinforcements were so that they could have a fresh new army to fight them with. This leads to another maneuver, which happened once Napoleon finally realized the Prussians had retreated. Napoleon decided to send a big chunk of his army after the Prussians even though his army would be around 2 days behind them. This was a bad move because then when the French army reached Waterloo he now had to face the British and the Prussians combined without part of his army to use. Another maneuver was when Napoleon tried to do a faint attack at Hogomouh but it doesnââ¬â¢t work and because of that he loses much more troops then needed; this lead to the eventual loss of the war. And the last battle maneuver was when Wellington had his army hide behind a ridge and therefore Ney believed they were retreating and sent his cavalry after them. Once his cavalry got over the ridge they were annihilated by the British infantry, which eventually led to them losing the battle. Napoleon as a general made some bad choices during these battles. One bad choice he made was not following the Prussians right away when they retreated. Because of this the Prussians were able to get back to their reinforcements and then were able to meet up with the British. Another bad choice Napoleon made was when he decided to wait 4 hours to battle because he wanted the ground to dry to help his cavalry and artillery. Because of this move he allowed the Prussians enough time to get to the battle and now he had to fight two armies instead of one. And the next bad decision Napoleon made was sending his cavalry on an assault on Mont Saint Jean because he took a big loss on cavalry from that. One of the key reasons why Napoleon and his French army were defeated was because of the attack at Hogomouh. He lost a lot more troops then he needed to which did not help him in the long run. The next reason why he was defeated is because of the imperial guard attack. In this attack he lost a lot of cavalry that could have helped out later in the war. And the final key reason Napoleons army lost was that he delayed one of the battles. Because he delayed attacking it gave the Prussians enough time to arrive and help out the British. Overall Napoleon made some key decisions that turned out to lead to his defeat. Sources ââ¬Å"Battle of Waterloo. â⬠à Wikipedia. English Self Assessment free essay sample
Evaluative Essay During the duration of a class one is to learn as much as possible. It is in the studentââ¬â¢s best interest to not only pass a class, but take full advantage of all resources given. When entering an English class one is to expect large abundance of work, and very time consuming essays. It is entirely true, but the point is repetition and practice. Personally, the goals set for myself were simple. Previously I had trouble with organizing and formatting a full paper, so the goal was to improve these techniques. Being a Business Administration Major, stating my point and organizing is extremely important. Therefore, gaining course material on analyzing, critiquing, and focusing on arguments was the ultimate goal. Stated back in the Diagnostic Writing Assignment, I was unfamiliar with the relation between English and Business. With the course material and other resources, I was taught all writing is argument. We will write a custom essay sample on English Self Assessment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The resources that were beneficial were other English classes that I was able to attend. A friend of mine is a student at California State University, Los Angles (CSULA) and I was able to attend his English 102 class. The degree of difficulty was much higher than English 101, but the exposure to higher education was very beneficial to this class. From a self-evaluation, I believe the goal I had set for myself was reached. Techniques presented in the class were extremely beneficial, specifically rough drafts and outlines. Although the outlines and techniques practiced were basic, they were able to give me a clear example of what I wished to write about. This prevented my usual act of jumping the gun. Within this semester, it seemed ironic that we took more notes than any of my other classes; references towards jotting ideas, and creating outlines were the ultimate knowledge I gained from the class. However, there was a flaw that was revealed when writing. Combining the work I have completed, I noticed there was a large amount of mechanical errors. It seems that the constant focus of organizing and formatting was the ultimate demise towards basic fundamentals. An example would be Essay 2 where an ââ¬Å"Fâ⬠was given towards mechanical errors. This, and a Reaction Paper on the reading How We Die, revealed formatting was intermediate. However, the lack of revising and common word structure held me back. The techniques and knowledge gained in this class were extremely beneficial. The aspects that I appreciated the most were the nonstop information given to us during class. Since day one, resources and notes were handed to us like candy. Personally I wish I took a little more time evaluating all the resources, but overall it was the most Iââ¬â¢ve learned in any English class Iââ¬â¢ve taken. Although the workflow did seem a bit overwhelming at times, the amount of knowledge gained was able to compensate. If there was anything to complain about, it was the time within a class and the long duration kept it hard to focus at times. Definitely taking into consideration next time is having split days for an English class. In addition to basic writing techniques was the all-around focus of the class. Although the subject was death, it was very interesting and opened my eyes. I really appreciate the sense of acceptance one gains from learning about death. The touchy subject was held very professional by the professor and he brought an abundance of intelligence to a vague subject. From the knowledge gained in this class future necessities are easily reached. I plan to major in business and the writing techniques easily influence my speaking ability as well. There is still much improvement that needs to be made as shown in the past work and Essay 2. The class will be beneficial for future classes that I plan to take like English 102, Speech, and any other Business class. Also being employed at Disneyland Resort, I plan to transfer to Guest Relations, so the writing and comprehension skills gained in this course are needed. Dealing with guest, and writing full reports on complaints and compliments will prove the writing techniques gained in class. Also in the course was a quiz on literary terms. Understanding the terms and being able to define each one specifically improves the way I am able to speak and interact with other people.

The Association between Dust Incidents and Respiratory Diseases in Abu Dhabi
Introduction The climateââ¬â¢s peculiarities of the Middle East make the population of the countries in the region suffer from a lot of dust incidents every year which occur frequently in relation to the definite season. Summer is the period with the most intensive dust storms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Syria, and Iraq.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Association between Dust Incidents and Respiratory Diseases in Abu Dhabi specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The population of the countries with the similar weather conditions such as Lebanon and Israel observe the most drastic dust storms in spring. Dust storms are typical for the climate of Egypt not only for springs but also for winters. The problem is in the fact that such dust incidents as dust storms have a lot of negative effects not only on the environment and economy of the countries but also on their populationââ¬â¢s health. Researchers state that it is possible to examine the direct dependence of the development of respiratory diseases among the population of the Middle Eastern countries on the dust stormsââ¬â¢ frequency (Akbari, 2011; Kutiel Furman, 2003). Moreover, the possibility of frequent dust storms as the characteristic feature of the regionââ¬â¢s climate negatively affects the development of such chronic diseases caused by the sandstorm dust as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The purpose of this research is to examine and describe the possible correlation between such dust incidents as dust storms and the prevalence of respiratory diseases in the Middle Eastern region with references to the situation in Abu Dhabi. The climate conditions of Abu Dhabi are characterized by frequent dust and sand storms which negatively affect the populationââ¬â¢s state of health and cause different respiratory diseases which are often discussed as chronic ones (asthma and COPD). The Nature and Impacts of Dust/Sand Storms in the Region of the Middle East The causes of dust/sand storms in the UAE are the same ones as in any country of the Middle Eastern region. The sand storms are caused by the forces of wind and the prolonged droughts contribute to the development of the process. Thus, the wind affects the vibration of sand particles which later begin to saltate. Akbari states that then the particles of sand ââ¬Å"repeatedly strike the ground, they loosen smaller particles of dust which then begin to travel in suspensionâ⬠(Akbari, 2011, p. 228). The Persian Gulf region ââ¬Å"suffers from considerably more dust storms than the other regions. The averaged maximum occurs in the summer during which for more than 30% of the time there is a level of airborne dust that reduces visibility to below 11 kmâ⬠(Akbari, 2011, p. 229). Moreover, dust incidents can also occur in spring and winter when the percentage of their frequency is rather low. Dust storm s are characterized by a lot of negative impacts which can be discussed as rather severe for the countriesââ¬â¢ environment, economy, and social life of the population in relation to the increase of health problems, especially a development of the respiratory diseases.Advertising Looking for research paper on environmental studies? It is also possible to observe the extreme reduction of solar radiation, and the consequences of this process are the efficiency of solar devices. Sand storms can destroy telecommunications and other mechanical systems. They result in the dirt, air pollution, and the increase of respiratory diseases (Akbari, 2011; Kutiel Furman, 2003). Why are sand storms so risky for the environment and population of the UAE? Akbari pays attention to the fact that ââ¬Å"a sandstorm can move whole sand dunes. Dust storms can carry large amounts of dust, so much so that the leading edge of one can appear as a solid wall of dust as much as 1.6 km (1 mile) highâ⬠(Akbari, 2011, p. 228). The effects of this phenomenon can be dangerous for the territory where the process is the most intensive. To prevent the negative effects of dust and sand storms which are observed in the region during the whole year, it is necessary to concentrate on examining the peculiarities of these dust incidents, accentuating the factors which contribute to their development. Moreover, it is also important to work out the system of effective decreasing the consequences of the drastic sand storms. The economists pay much attention to overcoming the impacts of sand storms on the agriculture, the ecologists concentrate on protecting the envir onment from these severe processes, and doctors develop the ways to reduce the negative effects of dust and sand storms for people who suffer from asthma and COPD. The problem of dust storms is also typical for the territories which have different climatic conditions in comparison with those ones in the UAE. In their research, Shao and Dong focus on the methods to cope with dust storms effectively at the territories of China, Korea, and Japan (Shao Dong, 2006). The researchersââ¬â¢ conclusions about the effectiveness of monitoring dust storms and modeling systems to predict the consequences and overcome the impacts can be effective for analyzing the aspects of the problem in the UAE because the negative effects of dust storms on the quality of the peopleââ¬â¢s life, their health, and social activities can be considered as comparable for these countries.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Association between Dust Incidents and Respiratory Disea ses in Abu Dhabi specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The Problem of Respiratory Diseases in the World and in Abu Dhabi The increase of the amount of people who suffer from the respiratory diseases which have the chronic form can be observed every year. Moreover, chronic respiratory diseases become the cause for increasing the level of mortality in the definite countries. According to the data presented at the meeting of Global Alliance Against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD), asthma and COPD caused the death of 250 000 persons in 2005, and this number increases every year with taking the third position of causing the peopleââ¬â¢s death globally (WHO, 2008, p.1). According to the results of Hajat, Harrison, and Shatherââ¬â¢s research, respiratory diseases take the sixth position as the cause of deaths in Abu Dhabi. That is why, respiratory diseases are discussed as the influential factors for causing the personsââ¬â¢ deaths w ith references to non-communicable diseases (Hajat, Harrison, Shather, 2012). (Hajat, Harrison, Shather, 2012). The situation in the UAE can be compared with the situation in the countries with the similar climatic conditions. It is stated in researches that respiratory diseases is the main causes for the populationââ¬â¢s deaths in Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon (WHO, 2006). According to Nuwayhid, Youssef, and Habib, ââ¬Å"rainfall decrease and increase in temperature will increase air pollution and consequently cause an increase in respiratory illnesses among urban populations, particularly in Egypt, Lebanon and the United Arab Emiratesâ⬠(Nuwayhid, Youssef, Habib, 2009, p. 90). The development of these diseases is correlated with the frequency of dust incidents.Advertising Looking for research paper on environmental studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It is possible to determine such causes for developing the chronic respiratory diseases as the intensification of the air pollution caused by increasing the level of dangerous substances in the air. Breathing the extremely polluted air as a result of the industriesââ¬â¢ development, a lot of people over the world suffer from the reduced lung function, different symptoms of asthma and COPD, and from chronic bronchitis. However, the situation in the UAE is more complicated because of the fact the majority of symptoms of the respiratory diseases depend on the high level of presence of the sand and dust particles in the air. Thus, the professors who presented their reports at the GARD meeting stated that the percentage of the morbidity and mortality caused by asthma and COPD is comparatively high in the Middle East, and the risky situation continues to develop (WHO, 2008). In spite of the fact the main cause for the development of the chronic respiratory diseases is determined by the researchers as the climatic peculiarities and the frequent occurrence of dust and sand storms, the aspects of ââ¬Ëcivilizationââ¬â¢ also significantly influence the prevalence of the respiratory diseases in the region. According to Hajat, Harrison, and Shather, the increase of chronic diseases in Abu Dhabi, including respiratory diseases, is connected with the growth of the regionââ¬â¢s status and its intensive development (Hajat, Harrison, Shather, 2012). The definite aspects of the western way of life such as the growth of industries and transport can cause the peopleââ¬â¢s suffering from non-communicable diseases. The rapid growth of industries ââ¬Å"is causing air quality to become poor in the large cities due to motor vehicles and industrial emissions. The health impact can be seen by the fact that the incidence of respiratory diseases has increased in the past 10 yearsâ⬠(WHO, 2006, p. 44). The next important factor is smoking. Thus, the quality of the air decreases, and the peculiarities of the climate in Abu Dhabi contribute to complicating the situation. Nevertheless, the researchers are inclined to associate the problem of respiratory diseases in the UAE, and Abu Dhabi in particular, with the peculiarities of the regionââ¬â¢s hot and dry climate. Thus, occasional violent sand and dust storms can cause a lot of damage, reduce visibility, and contribute to worsening the health of those persons who suffer from different respiratory diseases. In their investigation, Zaabi and the group of researchers concentrated on the connection between the development of COPD in Abu Dhabi and smoking. The researchers concluded that there are no direct connections between the health problems and smoking because of the fact there are a lot of the other factors which stimulate the worsening of the populationââ¬â¢s health state in Abu Dhabi and the increase of the amount of people with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD (Zaabi et al., 2010 ). Thus, the question of more risky factors for developing respiratory diseases remains open because the situation in Abu Dhabi can be discussed as caused by the combination of the negative impacts of breathing the chemically polluted air, smoking, breathing the air with the particles of sand and dust storms. Salvi and Barnes also focus on examining the possible correlations between the fact of active or passive smoking and the development of COPD, and they conclude that chronic asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease depend not only on the fact of smoking or the effects of biomass fuel but also on the combination of the definite socio-economic factors, and the peculiarities of the certain nationsââ¬â¢ development (Salvi Barnes, 2009). The results of the research are significant for analyzing the role of such factors as, for instance, smoking and breathing the air polluted with the sand and dust particles for the development of the respiratory diseases. It is possible t o conclude that the prevalence of respiratory diseases in the UAE and Abu Dhabi is based on such significant factors as the progress of the life according to the definite western patterns, the industriesââ¬â¢ growth, the development of the unhealthy habit to smoke, the pollution of the air with the sand and dust particles which is caused by the occasional sand storms. Chronic respiratory diseases are the causes for a lot of deaths in the region, and the frequency of sand and dust storms can be discussed as the negative factor for changing the statistical data in relation to the issue. The Connection between Dust/Sand Storms and Respiratory Diseases in Abu Dhabi Today, a lot of people who live in Abu Dhabi suffer from coughing and wheezing, such chronic respiratory diseases as asthma and COPD. Mahboub, Santhakumar, Soriano, and Pawankar conducted the complex research to examine the peculiarities of asthma in the UAE, concentrating on the factors which stimulate its development and on the ways of the effective treatment (Mahboub, Santhakumar, Soriano, Pawankar, 2010). The problem is in the fact chronic respiratory diseases are often caused by the combination of negative factors among which it is necessary to focus on smoking and the climatic peculiarities of the region. Thus, dust and sand storms are discussed as the most influential aspects for developing the peopleââ¬â¢s shortness of breath and worsening their chronic respiratory diseases. Kwaasi (as cited in Nuwayhid, Youssef, Habib, 2009, p. 92) pays attention to the fact that sandstorm dust is a ââ¬Å"prolific source of potential triggers of allergic and nonallergic respiratory ailmentsâ⬠. Such dust incidents as sand storms in the UAE are the environmental risk factors which cause the prevalence of asthma, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and COPD in the region. The periods which can be considered as the seasons of dust/sand storms in Abu Dhabi are characterized by the pat ientsââ¬â¢ frequent complaints about their chronic respiratory diseases or allergic rhinitis. That is why, it is important for people to stay indoors when the violent sand storms occur in order to avoid the deterioration of the physical state of those persons who suffer from asthma or COPD. Nowadays, many researchers agree that it is possible to observe the direct correlation between the development of asthma, COPD, and the other respiratory diseases and the frequency of dust and sand storms in the UAE because the particles of sand influence the respiratory system, causing its allergic reactions or worsening the chronic diseases (Nuwayhid, Youssef, Habib, 2009). From this point, the climatic and weather peculiarities of the region such as the vast desert area and the changes in temperature provoke dust incidents which cause a lot of respiratory diseases, and this logic chain ends with the high percentage of mortality affected by the development of respiratory diseases in the UAE (Hajat, Harrison, Shather, 2012). In spite of the fact dust/sand storms are dangerous for the peopleââ¬â¢s health in Abu Dhabi because of the peculiarities of this weather phenomenon, the situation can be complicated with the personsââ¬â¢ habit to smoke. Breathing the air polluted with the sand particles and gases, people increase the risks of worsening their physical state and developing chronic respiratory diseases. The researchers pay attention to the fact that dust and sand storms can provoke the development of the respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and allergic rhinitis and can prolong the patientsââ¬â¢ suffering from COPD and bronchial asthma (Zaabi et al., 2011). It is important to note that the seasons of dust and sand storms in the UAE are the periods of the hot and windy weather when the percentage of the patientsââ¬â¢ complaints about their health and respiratory diseases is extremely high, and it can be very low during the other seasons of a year. Thus, dust and sand storms are directly associated with increasing the level of respiratory diseases in the UAE, and in Abu Dhabi in particular. It is rather difficult to find the ways of prevention from developing allergies and worsening asthma during the seasons of dust and sand storms because of the necessity to go outdoors and continue the everyday activity. That is why, doctors draw the patientsââ¬â¢ attention to the importance of following some rules among which the avoidance of smoking and covering their nose and mouth while being outdoors. Some easy forms of the respiratory diseases caused by the dust and sand storms which are typical for the region of the UAE can develop into asthma, lung diseases, and even trachea and bronchus cancers. From this point, the problem of respiratory diseases and its association with the frequency of dust incidents in Abu Dhabi is important for examining by the researchers because respiratory diseases are the cause for the premature deaths of the population in the region. Conclusions The high level of mortality from respiratory diseases in the UAE, and in Abu Dhabi in particular, is based on the peculiarities of the climate in the region when the hot and dry windy weather influences the dust incidents which cause the personsââ¬â¢ problems with the respiratory system. Dust/sand storms affect the situation when millions of sand particles are distributed with the help of the wind and provoke the development of the allergic reactions. Dust and sand storms are frequent in summer and spring, and these seasons are characterized by the extremely high percentage of the patientsââ¬â¢ complaints about asthma, COPD, and allergies. To avoid the negative effects of dust incidents, it is necessary for people to stay predominantly indoors and protect their nose and mouth when they are outdoors. It is possible to conclude that the prevalence of asthma, COPD, and other respiratory diseases in Abu Dhabi is directly associated with dust storms in the region because these dust incidents provoke the negative stimulation of the peopleââ¬â¢s respiratory system, contributing to the development of a lot of symptoms such as coughing and problems with breathing. Living in the UAE, people have to adapt to the climatic peculiarities in order to avoid the health problems, and respiratory diseases caused by these peculiarities can be discussed as characteristic for the populationââ¬â¢s health in Abu Dhabi.
